I used to think I used to think There is no future left at all I used to think

--- radiohead is going back into the studio in january. see ed's post on dead air space for more info. I was literally jumping with joy when I read this wonderful, wonderful news...I have a feeling most people are not all surprised at my reaction...given that radiohead is the most blogged "subject" on this blog, by a long way!

--- london calling... and I'm feeling obliged to comply...23-27/1!

--- QI g...not available in sweden, sadly, but I'm hoping to find an alternative source...if YOU know how/where, please share that information!

--- according to numerous sources that I do not wish to doubt, the first of 26 brand new futurama episodes will begin airing in mid-2010...on comedy central, but I'm sure (or at least, I hope) it will make it over to europe not long after!

that's just some of the things I'm looking forward to in the new year...there is one more, but I don't think I'm ready to share that one with you just yet...I'll keep you posted, I promise...but there are things that need to be sorted out, plans to be planned, details to be dealt with first...

This is one for the good days and i have it all here In red, blue, green You are my center When i spin away Out of control on videotape

(bye bye bye...time to move on) goodBYE 2009

let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable, let's prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

we don't have to save the world. the world is big enough to look after itself. what we have to be concerned about is whether or not the world we live in will be capable of sustaining us in it.

the fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be.

human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

you live and learn. at any rate, you live
--- douglas adams

you can know the name of a bird in all the languages of the world, but when you're finished, you'll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird... so let's look at the bird and see what it's doing — that's what counts. I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something.

I have a friend who's an artist, and he sometimes takes a view which I don't agree with. he'll hold up a flower and say, "look how beautiful it is," and I'll agree. but then he'll say, "I, as an artist, can see how beautiful a flower is. but you, as a scientist, take it all apart and it becomes dull." I think he's kind of nutty. [...] there are all kinds of interesting questions that come from a knowledge of science, which only adds to the excitement and mystery and awe of a flower. it only adds. I don't understand how it subtracts.

I can live with doubt, and uncertainty, and not knowing. I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. I have approximate answers, and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and in many things I don’t know anything about, such as whether it means anything to ask why we’re here, and what the question might mean. I might think about a little, but if I can’t figure it out, then I go to something else. but I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without having any purpose, which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn’t frighten me.

Please could you stop the noise, I'm trying to get some rest From all the unborn chicken voices in my head

of the 160 odd radiohead/thom yorke related songs on my douglas*, and the overall fantasticness of radiohead, with the new stuff, the old stuff, the various thom yorke side projects, you'd think that maybe, a song that was released in 1997 on ok computer could easily get lost in the mix. not the case with paranoid android...my latest addiction! in fact, I'm in the process of re-discovering ok computer as an album. despite having listened to NOTHING but radiohead for a good couple of months now, I haven't really listened that much to ok computer (or pablo honey...but for different reasons). I lived/breathed/ate/drank ok computer when it was first released...it's not that I got bored with it, but I've felt I wanted to explore some of the radiohead albums I have listened less to over the years, like kid a and amnesiac.

(one of the best albums of all time...? YES!)
(album cover design: stanley donwood...as ever!)

want to immerse your soul in paranoid androidness? do not despair, it's only a click away!

paranoid android live at saitama super arena, japan, 2008 (this is partly shot in a mtv-y style, especially the middle- and end sections...maybe best steer clear of this one if you're a migrane sufferer or are prone to dizzy spells and/or epilepsy! but it's so f**king great though, so might be worth a look-see nevertheless!)
paranoid android live at later with jools holland, 1997

I am a moth who just wants to share your light I'm just an insect trying to get out of the night

just been watching four episodes from the last chance to see series. I knew it was going to be good, but...WOW!

(mark and stephen with a couple of brown lemurs)

I watched the kakapo episode first...for obvious reasons. then the amazonian manatee, the northern white rhino and the aye-aye episodes. it's fascinating and frightening at the same time. read last chance to see by douglas adams and mark carwardine a few years ago and was completely blown away by it (I hate that expression, but I'm too lazy to think of a better one right now). really looking forward to the komodo dragon episode now!

I'm off to bed in a little bit...need to "catch up" on some sleep as I'm currently recovering from a two day drinking session (didn't get home until about 5.30am or something this morning...oops)...but I need dose of radiohead first to see me through the night. my radiohead obsession is becoming more and more severe...I'm a radiohead junkie...a radioheadhead!

There are better things to talk about Be constructive Bear witness We can use Be constructive With yer blues...

nanananananananananananana...I'm off work for FOUR whole days as of 2.25pm this afternoon...nanananananananananananana

don't really have anything special/new/exciting to write about (sorry...I hate when people do that on blogs, and here I am...HYPOCRITE).

bought the last christmas gifts yesterday, and a few extras for myself...this dress for example (apologies for the crap pic...I have to sort my digital camera out, I've only got my mobile camera at the moment, hence the appalling quality).

(actually bought this dress today, NOT yesterday as I am claiming above...I'm such a liar!)

went to see this year's light show on terrastrapporna/kärnan last night...click on this link if you want to see the 10 minute long light show! it's pretty good actually! here are a few stills of the show (again, taken with my appalling mobile phone camera...)

Forget about your house of cards And I'll do mine Fall off the table Get swept under Denial, denial

today has been an all round good-ish, albeit in parts frustrating day.

I woke up at 4.30am, got up 4.48am (I snoozed my alarm 2x9 minutes)...had a shower, got dressed and cycled to work in the freezing cold on snow covered, icy streets. arrived at work a lot earlier than predicted and had to wait for the gates to open. went in, had a cup of hot chocolate and chatted to my sister for a while. then I started sorting christmas cards. then some more christmas cards. breakfast! then back to sorting christmas cards...and so the day went until it was home time at 3pm. 9 hours of sorting christmas cards...what is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything...42! more like 42-million christmas cards!

(this is roughly the amount of boxes of christmas cards I sorted through today. I have no idea why the beardy man in the pic looks so f**king happy!?!
...he obviously doesn't work for posten!!!)

...and I couldn't even listen to radiohead whilst doing this utterly menial task! :(

now, on a happier and tastier note... I've been baking this evening!!! again! again=I made colourful cupcakes for adian's birthday party on saturday (adian is my friends carolin and john's one year old son). I'll upload a pic of the cupcakes when I get the pics from carolin. no cupckaes today, instead I made lussekatter (saffron buns). I've just had one, and I don't want to boast or anything...but it tasted like heaven in a reversed S-shape with saffron! traditionally, we (that's us swedish people) put raisins in the lussekatts too...but as I think fruit in food is criminal, so I left them out.

(skinny lussekatts)

(fat lussekatts)

(I forgot to eggwash them before they went into the oven, hence the "dry look"...ARGH...I always forget something...or maybe I should start to read the recipes more carefully before embarking on any baking adventure in the future...just a thought)

I'm gonna have myself a lussekatt and a cup of lady tea now... :)

dan före dan för dan före dopparedan...!

naive?

maybe I'm being really naive, but I'd really like to think that if we all chip in and do our bit, then maybe, just maybe we can avoid...no, avoid is too strong a word and not accurate (unfortunatelly) under the circumstances. but maybe the outcome won't be as disastrous as is being predicted at the moment. seems inevitable, but have to stay optimistic!

it's not too late (I keep telling myself)...

there is endless reading material on the subject but it's too much to take in all at once...so I ingest it in little bite size chunks instead.

here's some of it:

Saturday, December 19

how can I cut 10%?

below is a list of things YOU can do to cut 10% of emissions by the end of 2010...for a more detailed list, please visit the 10:10 website!

1 Fly less, holiday more
Swap plane for train, holiday nearer to home and take fewer but longer trips - same tanning time, dramatically less climate change emissions.
2 Save 10% on heating
Turn down your thermostat, turn off radiators in hallways and more jumpers all round.
3 Save 10% on electricity
Save big cash by changing lightbulbs, replacing old fridges & freezers and always turning stuff off.
4 Drive less
Leave your car at home one day a week. Walk, cycle or take public transport. Join a car-club rather than owning your own and share your ride to work with a colleague or two.
5 Eat better
Local, in-season fruit & veg produce the least emissions – and the less processed the better. Have one meat-free day per week – but don’t replace with just-as-bad cheese.
6 Buy good stuff
Less stuff made = less emissions = less climate damage. So buy high-quality things that last, repair broken stuff rather than chucking, buy & sell second-hand and borrow your neighbour’s mower.
7 Dump less
Avoid excess packaging and buying pointless stuff that goes straight in the bin, recycle everything possible and compost your food waste.
8 Don’t waste food…
The average British family throws away £50 worth of food every month. So don’t buy or cook more than you need and eat up those tasty leftovers. With a smile on your face.
9 … or water
Your tap water uses lots of energy – and then heating it in your home uses loads more – so take showers rather than baths, be careful when watering plants and only run full dishwashers & washing machines.
10 Feel happier
It’s Dec 2010... you’re healthier for walking & cycling, you’ve made new friends from swapping stuff & car-pooling, you’ve saved a big chunk of cash... and you know that you’re part of the global effort to prevent castastrophic climate change...

spread the word...

Who's in a bunker? Who's in a bunker? Women and children first And the children first And the children

the alarm bells are ringing, but no one wants to listen!

too scared to...or just too fucking stupid?

tragic words are echoing in my head, but I need to know...what are we to do? what will happen now?

failure, utter failure! but fear not...the global market is intact and will keep expanding! fear not...you'll still be able to get you kiwi fruits in the super market tomorrow morning! fear not...turn up the heating in your house! this isn't happenig! fear not...why walk when you can drive! fear not...don't listen...ignorance is bliss! but ignorance kills.! fear not!

why did we let this happen, and why are we willing to let it continue?

I wish I could ignore what's happening and I wish the ney-sayers were right...I do...I really do...but what if they're not...are you willing to risk it?

no choice, no time...it may already be too late, but I can't let that thought enter my mind completely...have to stay optimistic, have to keep trying...have to do something!

not good enough

not good enough by a long way...

"...US envoys insisted, for example, on replacing the word "shall" with the conditional "should"."

"US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said her administration was prepared to help establish funding of $100bn a year for developing countries if a deal emerges here that meets US requirements."

"Every politician in Copenhagen is now put on notice. They have one day left to step up or they will forever be remembered as the people who let this happen."

"EU anser att de två texterna är "obalanserade". Den ena texten berör en förlängning av det nuvarande klimatavtalet Kyotoprotokollet med bindande klimatåtagande för en rad i-länder. Det andra handlar om det långsiktiga klimatsamarbetet globalt, som dock inte ställer några bindande krav. Det innebär att USA och Kina inte omfattas av bindande åtaganden, säger EU-källan, som uppger att Kina tjänat på det bråk som uppstått kring arbetsordningen."

I don't think it's snowed this much, this close to christmas since the mid eighties!!! it started yesterday when I was out on my round in maria park and it pretty much hasn't stopped since. there are only a few inches of snow on the ground, but it's been quite warm and it melts at about the same rate as it hits the ground. just checked my thermometre and it's exactly 0c now, and it keeps getting colder so with a bit of luck I'll be snowed in by tomorrow morning!!! ;)

not too keen on driving around in walter in this weather...

(törnsångaregatan in maria park from inside walter tuesday afternoon...it had only just begun snowing at this point)

(the view from my livingroom wednesday night...the road is completely covered in snow now...white, white and yet more whiteness is all I see)

(törnsångaregatan at about 1pm today, thursday 17/12)

speaking of work...we're on our christmas rota as of this week, which means an even earlier start (I usually work 6.30am-2.20pm). this week and next we start ar 5.45am and finish at 3pm...which in turn means I have to wake up at 4.45am (3.45gmt)...it must be illegal!!! ...and I have to wake up at this insufferable hour because people are sending millions of christmas cards! christmas cards that gets chucked in the bin (by most people...I don't, I keep all mine) when the holidays are over. now, I'm not going to rant on and on about christmas cards, I just want a little bit of sympathy for having to wake up so dreadfully early! so please remember this when you get your christmas cards...somewhere there's a postie that's had to drag him-/herself to work several hours before you've even had your first cup of tea/coffee that morning, just so that those glittery little paper cards will reach you before christmas!

appreciation for your postie...is best shown with a gift containing lots and lots of chocolate!

this is my current top 20 radiohead/thom yorke playlist...I'm listening to it as I write this blog post!
